I have owned all the classic series of Boulder amplifiers: AE, AEs, and the AE. Next came a pair of Boulder ae, dutifully fulfilled their job but still not up to the ultimate demand of Diva. Then I tried a Jadis Defy 7 and a Krell KSA A very good combination, plus these two seemed to have about the same gain. However, the KSA I got was not perfect, and Defy 7 would run out of steam in demanding passages. The L5AE was an excellent mate to the Boulder AE - makes sense given they where designed to be used together. It's certainly one of the best preamps I've owned at a certain performance level, it's really just a matter of taste as to what suits you and you're current system. The build quality is excellent, as is typical of Boulder products.

To high-end audiophiles, the Boulder amplifier and its less expensive derivative, the AE (Audiophile Edition), would not seem to be "high-end" designs.
